About the group

 We support anyone working with PR and communications in the not-for-profit sector – from charities and social enterprises to housing associations and local government.

We aim to:


  • Champion members working with not-for-profit organisations
  • Demonstrate the value of PR by sharing good practice and celebrating success
  • Enhance CIPR’s continuing professional development offer
  • Reflect the diversity of our members, particularly geographically

We do this by providing opportunities for members to develop their skills, build their network and broaden their knowledge base within the sector.

About the Community


Holly Wilkins


Holly has spent her career in the public sector, promoting disabled people's employment rights and enabling independent living, tackling youth unemployment, pensions saving and working with international communications teams to leverage the UK's soft power. Holly is an experienced communications leader and trusted adviser, her communications skills are primarily campaigns, stakeholder engagement and internal communications. Holly is a member of the Government Communications Service and delivers their Aspire training in External Affairs.

Gemma Pettman

Vice Chair

Gemma helps organisations connect with their communities by improving how they communicate. She has more than 20 years’ experience of not-for-profit PR, working with public sector organisations, charities, social enterprises and membership organisations. She has a particular interest in social and criminal justice. As well as volunteering with the CIPR, Gemma provides pro bono support to several small community organisations and charities.


Lesley Miller


Lesley has worked in PR, marketing and communications for more than 25 years, starting in print journalism before becoming a TV producer/director for the BBC and then moving into PR and marketing. With significant public sector and international charity experience, especially in crisis communications, Lesley currently heads up the Marketing and Communication Team for an independent school charity as well as undertaking freelance PR and communications consultancy work for a variety of clients.

Claire Melia-Tompkins

Claire has worked in public relations and communications for more than 18 years, with roles across local government, central government and third sector. Claire specialises in change communications and engagement; heading up the stakeholder communications team at Action for Children, one of the largest children’s charities in the UK. Claire is also a committee member for other CIPR groups and a trustee for St Luke’s Hospice Harrow and Brent.

Yvonne Wilcox

Events Co-ordinator

Yvonne has over 25 years’ experience in media and communications, starting in charitable sponsorship at Sainsbury’s before moving into the Not-for-Profit sector working for Help the Aged. Yvonne, an independent consultant, has worked for a range of charities, such as Arthritis Care and the British Liver Trust, as well as being the Chief Executive of a small health charity. Yvonne is also a member of the CIPR Greater London group.

Anne Nicholls

Newsletter Editor

Anne has worked in PR and communications within the not-for-profit sector for nearly 30 years, covering charities, public sector organisations, universities and colleges. She has a particular specialism in education. Joining City & Guilds as their first press officer she progressed to head of communications roles at London College of Communication and the UCL Institute of Education. Anne is now freelancing as an education and charity specialist focusing on communications strategy, media relations, writing and team building. She is a CIPR Chartered Practitioner.

Adam Grinsell

Social Media Editor

Adam is currently working as communications manager for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, one of England’s oldest charities, and entered communications after spending four years in local journalism. Having recently completed his CIPR Diploma, Adam’s experience lies in media and stakeholder relations, issues and reputation management, and public affairs.

Eranta Andersone

Eranta started her communications career in the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) industry at a language school in Devon, focusing on stakeholder relations and social media. Now working as a Communications and Marketing Officer at newly rebranded Foothold, a charity for engineers, Eranta is using her experience to improve brand visibility. In addition to committee membership of CIPR Not-for-Profit, Eranta is a member of the CIPR Greater London group.

Alona De Havilland

Alona has worked in marketing and communications for more than 25 years, starting in advertising before moving into communications. Heading the marketing and communications team at Shaw Trust, one of the largest charities in the UK, Alona specialises in strategic communications, engagement and change. In addition to committee membership of CIPR Not-for-Profit, linking with the south west group and safeguarding, Alona is a trustee of Stand Against Violence and chairs her local women’s group.

Charlotte Dimond

Charlotte is a Chartered PR Practitioner who has worked in the industry for more than 20 years. Working in a consultancy Charlotte represents clients including a number of charities in the leisure and health sectors. Charlotte specialises in strategic communication and crisis communication. In addition to being a committee member, Charlotte is an associate lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University teaching Strategic Communication and a Trustee at literary charity Grimm & Co.

Vikki is the Internal Communications Manager for World Vision UK. Having built the internal communications function from scratch over the last few years, Vikki is committed about building the capacity and skills of others within the organisation, empowering conversations between staff and leaders. She is passionate about developing her own skills and knowledge so she can provide the best support possible to her organisation, and is a Member of the CIPR.

Christine McGuinness

Christine has worked in media and communications for more than 20 years, starting in journalism before moving into communications. Communications Manager for NHS Golden Jubilee, one of Scotland’s national NHS Boards and a registered charity, Christine specialises in communications, marketing, media, PR and stakeholder engagement. In addition to committee membership of CIPR Not-for-Profit, Christine is a member of the Scotland national group.
